Gay Politician Spotlight: Hadrian

Publius Aelius Hadrianus more commonly known as Hadrian was the adopted son, and successor of Trajan.  Hadrian ruled from 117AD to 138AD, is the third of the “Five Good Emperors of Rome.” His succession was of some question, as his adopted father never officially designated Hadrian as his succesor.  It was Trajan’s wife, Pompeia Plotina who used her power as the First Lady of Rome to cement her adopted son Hadrian as Emperor of Rome.

Hadrian’s homosexuality is well documented.  Though he did marry Vibia Sabina, his homosexual relationship with Antinous is the stuff of legend.  Six years after Antinous became Hadrian’s lover, he was drowned in the Nile.  It is unclear whether or not Antinous was murdered, or if his drowning was accidental.  Either way, the Emperor’s grief has been recorded as being boundless.  He even had Antinous proclaimed a God, had Temples built in his honor, and named several cities after him.

Hadrian is most easily remembered by the wall he had built across Northern England.  It still stands in most sections, and is 73.5 statute miles long.  It was completed with labor from Slaves, and Roman Soldiers.  It was largely completed in six years, which was incredible given the resources, and labor available.

Hadrian is also known for his patronage of the arts.  He had many museums built, and himself wrote poetry.
